Oh, I need to sleep so very badly, LOL!

  • Sep. 8th, 2008 at 9:32 PM
hee, giggle
A demonstration that I am (1) a complete, utter, beyond-helping geek (2) very, very tired:

I was in Tesco this evening and I said to myself "I don't see any houmous in this cabinet; where do they keep their search function in this—oh. Ah. Oops."

(The human equivalent of a search function appeared to be Eastern European, and communication difficulties ensued, so I gave up.)

There you go with your cross-the-pond spelling, throwing extra o's in all willy nilly. It's hummus! ;)

I have actually caught my fingers reaching for "ctrl + f" before while shopping. And again when reading a book. So happy to know I'm not alone.

Well, it's transliterated from Arabic, so the rule is basically make it up. :)

Anyway, isn't it extra u's?

I do that all the time. Wandering around at random and hoping to stumble on what I want feels so wrong. When can I download the Reality upgrade?

But really, why don't more stores have little kiosks where you can run searches? Borders Books does, and it's great! (Oh, okay, money and time and all that. Pfff.)

We are the Google Generation: spoiled rotten.

I expect Tesco doesn't have a search kiosk because 1) they wouldn't update it, preferring to use their energies going 'We've hidden the bread on Aisle 11, mwahaha!' 2) normal people just ask.

I've been known to try and click on words or phrases I'd like more context for, and then remember that no, that doesn't work on paper books...

Hurrah for ebooks! Of course, they don't recover so well after being dropped into the bath as treeware does...

It's a thought - they've got this set up on their website - so all they have to do is put a few terminals here and there; you call up Express Shopper, and then,, if necessary, "rest of shelf".
um - snag is that you'd still need the Eastern European to direct you to the shelf.

As you said, I think the problem is not with knowing what's in stock in the shop (they have to do stock tracking, after all), but knowing whereabouts it is on the shop floor.

Just so - but do they move things more than - say - once a week?
How hard would it be to add an aisle number?

Oh, yes, it's certainly feasible, and probably quite easy given what they already have. The question is probably whether it's cost-effective.

Yes - but i see that Tesco in Bangor (Gwynedd) now has a work station/computer terminal in one of the aisles, with a notice explaining that this is so that the staff are more easily available to customers - so it would only be a short step further to allow customers to use the/a terminal
